1、生活简朴 Living Simple

　　素色棉布长衫裤、布鞋，练功时喜穿白色汗衫，这就是叶问常年不变的打扮；身居陋室，上午休息，下午阅读书籍、教授弟子习拳，晚上指导弟子至深夜，这是叶问基本的生活日程；闲时抽几口大熟头，与友人、弟子到茶楼“一盅两件”饮茶闲聊，便是叶问的最为喜好。生活简朴、安贫乐道，这就是叶问最好的生活写照。

　　Wearing plain coloured cheongsam and tennis shoes at causal and wearing white T-shirt while practicing Kunfu, this was what Grandmaster Ip usually dressed. Staying in his ordinary house, resting in the morning, reading and teaching Wing Chun in the afternoon and coaching disciples till late night, this was Grandmaster Ip’s daily schedule. Smoking tobacco, chatting with disciples and friends in Chinese restaurant, this were what Grandmaster Ip liked to do the most.

　　“Living simple and satisfying with what one’s have” truly described the lifestyle of Grandmaster Ip.

2、为人低调 Being Low-profile

　　叶问是詠春拳得以在全球推广的关键人物，是大名鼎鼎的功夫巨星李小龙的师傅。他武功卓越，却生性淡泊名利、与世无争，从不恃武好胜，始终保持低调。处事低调成就了叶问，令他远离江湖恩怨，得以79岁高龄寿终，同时又能把更多的精力投入到钻研武功以及传授武术中去。

　　Grandmaster Ip was the key person that promoted Wing Chun to the world and also the master of the famous Kungfu movie star – Bruce Lee. Though Grandmaster Ip had incomparable Kung fu skills, he preferred a low-profile life, he did not want fame or fight. Being low-profile allowed Grandmaster Ip to stay away from troubles and rivals in the Kungfu field, and lived long until 79; likewise, he could focus on drilling his Kung fu skills and passing his skills to his descendants.
　　　　　　

3、为“钱”教拳 Teaching for “money”

　　叶问武艺过人，品德高洁，被尊为一代宗师。不少人认为这样一位宗师应该不必为生计操劳。现实里的叶问性情真切，他坦承：教拳是为了赚钱生活。但为“钱”教拳的叶问却有教无类，收徒弟只论品质不论贫富，贫穷弟子交不上学费也不予责骂，甚至徒步廿公里上门指导却不收分毫，勤勤孜孜地以自己擅长的功夫自食其力，养活家人。

　　据说弟子李小龙在美国成名后，曾提出以一栋唐楼的代价请叶问录制木人桩套路，叶问断然谢绝。然却在离世前，请人把自己拳术套路演式尽数录下，以传后人。为“钱”教拳的叶问，让同仁及弟子肃然起敬。

　　With his excellency in Kungfu and high mentality , he was being honoured as the Grand Grandmaster Ip. Some people believed Ip should not be worried for his living. Grandmaster Ip was honest, he frankly shared that teaching Wing Chun was just for a living. He was different from those who taught for “money”, he never regretted any disciples, he accepted disciples only regarding to one’s personality but not one’s financial situation.

　　He never blamed his disciples who could not afford the fee; he had walked 20 kilometers to teach his disciples without taking a penny. He just used what he did the best – Wing Chun to make a living and raised his family.

　　It was said that Bruce Lee once offered Grandmaster Ip with a 7-8 floors building for recording how he played the Wooden Dummy Form, yet Grandmaster Ip gladly rejected.

　　Grandmaster Ip made a recording of him playing the Wooden Dummy form before he died for the sake of passing his Wing Chun skills to his disciples.

　　Grandmaster Ip teaching for “money” was well- received  and respected by other Kungfu masters and his disciples.

4、看重武德 Focusing on Kung fu Virtue

　　叶问对弟子没有一套长篇大论，落到细处的规则。“习武先立品、重节而轻利”寥寥数字就是其对弟子的要求，也是叶问宗支詠春拳派系一直所提倡。这十个字完整地勾勒出重礼崇德、刚健自强、贵和尚中，注重内外兼修的中华武术哲学观念，道明了叶问对本门弟子性情、志气、品格的要求，也体现了叶问深厚的传统文化涵養，看重武德。纵观叶问一生，行事为人始终恪守着这一信条。

　　Grandmaster Ip never added any long or detailed rules in his teaching. He only required them to behave with “Virtue is more important than Kungfu skills” and “Pride should be valued more than physical interests”. This is also what Wing Chun – Grandmaster Ip Man heritage always emphasizes on. This simply outlines the philosophical view of Chinese Kungfu that is honouring the virtue and rites of Chinese, self-strengthening ，being peaceful and mild/moderate,and emphasizing build-ups both physically and mentally and states the requirement of Grandmaster Ip’s disciples-mentality,attitude and behaviour.Hence,this clearly shown Grandmaster Ip carries a traditional culture background.

　　Looking back the whole life of Grandmaster Ip, he lived this principle himself through his acts and words.

5、胸襟广阔 Being Open-minded

　　中国武术“各美其美，和而不同”强调的是胸怀宽广、注重整体和谐的精神，是海纳百川、虚怀若谷的开放精神。叶问除了向弟子传授拳艺，还不持门户之见，经常带着弟子到其他詠春拳师处学习詠春，切磋交流。并鼓励出国留学的弟子教会身边的人，使更多的人学习詠春拳，对拳术的传承采取的是一种开放的态度。他还主张弟子广泛接触洪拳等其他武术门派，体现了叶问一代武术宗师的气度和胸襟。

　　All Chinese Kungfu have their own intelligence. They all emphasize to be open-minded and focus on as a whole and harmony that is the spirit of welcoming all and to be humbled.

　　Grandmaster Ip not only instructed his disciples, he always brought them to other Wing Chun clans to learn from others through Chisau; Grandmaster Ip kept an open attitude towards teaching and passing Wing Chun Kungfu, he encouraged his disciples abroad to teach their friends to make more people get to know Wing Chun. He also suggested his disciples to perceive other Kungfu such as Hung Kuen, this well shown the openness and humbleness of the Grandmaster Ip.

6、功夫要得 Stunning Kungfu

　　叶问生性平和，尽管身怀绝学，一生却难得与人比试。以下两件轶事，宗师的武功可见一斑。

　　某日，叶问和表妹等亲友在佛山观赏“秋色”游行时，一位当时的军阀排长欲对其表妹动手动脚，叶问突然上前，使出惯用的詠春拳法，对方立马倒地。军阀羞恼之下起身拔枪，叶问以迅雷不及掩耳工夫，握住对方手枪，徒手用大拇指直压手枪的轉輪，竟然把轮芯压弯，使其不能发射。此事在佛山一时成为佳话。

　　抗战胜利后，叶问因身怀绝技，应邀进入县政府刑事单位担负追捕盗贼劫匪等工作。他曾亲手侦破佛山沙塘坊之劫案，并在升平路升平戏院内亲擒劫匪。后在担任广州市南区巡逻队长职务期间，有一次以詠春技击徒手擒拿贼匪，成为坊众一时美谈。

　　Grandmaster Ip was a peaceful person, though he had magnificent Kungfu, he seldom put on a challenge; below two stories share about his Kungfu level:

　　One day, Ip Man , his cousin and relatives went travelling in Foshan. A warlord intended to harass Ip’s cousin, Ip showed up and defeated him on the ground with a few stances of Wing Chun. The warlord was angry and about to pull to his machine gun, Ip quickly held his gun and pressed the wheel with his thumb, and the wheel was twisted. This story was once the talk of the town in Foshan.

　　After the World War II, Ip was invited to work for the government to catch thieves subject to his Kungfu. He broke the robbery case in Foshan and caught abductors in Shengping Street. Later he worked as the 巡逻队长 in Guangzhou, he caught a theft with only his free hands and Wing Chun Kung fu; everybody talked about his brilliant Kungfu.

7、  疏财仗义 Generous and Righteous

　　叶问处事大方，每遇詠春门人的喜宴，定必抽空出席；有些武林上的应酬，即使不能赴会，他也必奉上贺礼。闲时亦爱与徒弟们到旺角喝茶，每次徒弟们都争着付钱，可见问公深受弟子爱戴。而每当弟子或相交经济拮据时，问公定必解囊相助，即使与对方仅是一面之缘，只要问公相信他真是要钱应急，必定不会吝啬。如此仗义疏财，在当时香港的经济环境下是十分罕见的。

　　Grandmaster Ip was generous, he always attended the wedding or celebration of friends or disciples of Wing Chun, for those he couldn’t attend, he’d send his regards with presents. During free time, Grandmaster Ip would went to Chinese restaurant with his disciples, and his disciples always fought to pay the bill. He was beloved by his disciples. Grandmaster Ip was always willing to help whenever his friends or disciples in need of money, even for general friends, he’d assist him/her without questioning. His generosity was rarely seen during those days in Hong Kong.

8、不摆架子的“问叔”The friendly “Uncle Man”

　　叶问斯文、幽默，为人和气，不摆架子，他不让弟子叫他师傅，而是喜欢弟子称他为“问叔”。而且他还喜欢为徒弟起外号，没有“武术教头”咄咄逼人的气势，师徒关系融洽和睦。无论是在佛山还是香港，茶楼上经常会见到“问叔”与弟子饮茶论武的身影，甚至和弟子一起打麻雀、看斗狗、逛街……。叶问性格随和，受到武林同道和弟子敬重。年老时，大家都尊称他为“问公”。

　　Grandmaster Ip was polite, humorous, peaceful, friendly; he liked his disciples to call him “Uncle Man” and forbidden them to greet him “Master”.He liked his disciples to give him nicknames as this break the gap between “Master” and “disciples”. “Uncle Man”always went to the Chinese restaurant with his disciples either in Foshan or Hong Kong, likewise, they sometimes played majong, watched dogs fights (can delete), went shopping and etc…Grandmaster Ip was nice and kind, he was deeply respected by other Kungfu masters and his disciples. They all greeted him “Grandmaster Ip”at his later stage.
